SOMETIMES REMOVING SOMETHING ADDS AS MUCH VALUE AS ADDING IT IN

This week has been another step closer on two fantastic projects we are involved in and brings some great learnings:

The first is converting an old social club/theatre/bar into 27 studio apartments. The site makes use of a series of buildings all connected by additions over the years but has little outdoor space or amenity area for the occupants. Using pre-app (see Adam's post earlier in the week) we have worked with the planners to incorporate small pockets of garden space that help to break up the mass of the project.

The second is a beautiful site in an affluent area with a number of outbuildings that are falling into disrepair. There is a strong rural vernacular in the area, with key features such as stone cladding and timber outbuildings, so we've sought to connect the buildings with slim glazed links and delicate additions, whilst demolishing parts to create a site that is holistic. LEARNING: Sometimes when converting existing buildings, taking something away (in this case demolishing part of the building) can bring just as much value as adding something.
